HERMAN MILLER: Design Charles + Ray Eames

Product Information

Side Chair.

An enduring Eames design. The lithe chairs of the Eames Aluminium Group have been a popular design since their introduction in 1958, and it’s no wonder. The graceful silhouette sits equally well in all kinds of home and workplace interiors. A wide range of material options allows a personalised look that, with its distinctive form, provides a statement of enduring design excellence wherever they are placed.

Timeless elegance. It’s uncanny how a chair designed in 1958 as outdoor seating still manages to look both classic and contemporary in twenty-first century interiors. The clean, trim lines are appropriate for all kinds of spaces, from classic and contemporary homes to elegant offices and hip start-ups.

The Eames Aluminium Group chairs, upholstered in traditional fabric or leather, are ribbed at 48-mm intervals for a clean, refined appearance. The Cygnus mesh option gives the chairs a lighter-scaled, translucent quality.

Innovative comfort. Never being ones to favour style over substance, Charles and Ray Eames gave their designs an innovative suspension that creates a firm, flexible “sitting pocket” that conforms subtly to the body’s shape. They created that suspension by stretching a continuous piece of seat-back upholstery tautly between lightweight aluminium side ribs.

Aluminium Group seat pads have a layered construction with fabric or leather upholstery. Cygnus mesh is a self-contouring, flexing material available on Aluminium Group chairs to provide aeration, even weight distribution and long-term comfort. Designed specifically for the Eames Aluminium Group, Cygnus is an elegant option.

Executive and management models have seat-height and tilt-swivel adjustments.

Durability. With one-piece, curved aluminium side ribs and a die-cast aluminium base, the chair is strong yet lightweight, and easy to move.

A major technical achievement. Aluminium Group chairs began as a challenge among some legendary designers. Eero Saarinen and Alexander Girard were designing the Columbus, Indiana home of industrialist J. Irwin Miller. They wanted a high-quality seating product for outdoor use and asked Charles and Ray Eames to develop one.

Known for their honest use of materials, the Eameses constructed their chairs with cast aluminium and a seat frame that would support a stretched synthetic mesh. The seat-back suspension was a major technical achievement and represented a departure from the concept of the chair as a solid shell.

Those chairs became the Aluminium Group, which Herman Miller began manufacturing in 1958. And while they have been in continuous demand, the line has changed and grown over the years. The original mesh meant for outdoor use was discontinued, along with the 4-star base and painted arms on the early designs.

In 2001, we introduced a new mesh material for the Aluminium Group. Called Cygnus, it is similar to the Pellicle fabric on the Aeron chair in its aeration and translucent qualities. The lounge and side chair models are again available in the 4-star base, a look that is particularly appropriate for the home.

“Recognising the need is the primary condition for design.” -Charles and Ray Eames

With a grand sense of adventure, Charles and Ray Eames turned their curiosity and boundless enthusiasm into creations that established them as a truly great husband-and-wife design team. Their unique synergy led to a whole new look in furniture. Lean and modern. Playful and functional. Sleek, sophisticated and beautifully simple. That was and is the “Eames look”.

That look and their relationship with Herman Miller started with moulded plywood chairs in the late 1940s and includes the world-renowned Eames lounge chair, now in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Charles and Ray achieved their monumental success by approaching each project the same way: Does it interest and intrigue us? Can we make it better? Will we have “serious fun” doing it?
