Mirra 2 Chairs

HERMAN MILLER: Design Studio 7.5

Product Information

Multipurpose Chair.

Lean, light and as responsive as your own shadow.

Support for people who work in a constant state of motion. As work evolves, and we become more active, shifting from individual to collaborative work in an instant, we need tools designed to be as agile as our work style. To address this need, the designers at Studio 7.5 set out to create a high-performance chair that supports people who work in a constant state of motion.

Immediate comfort and personalised ergonomics. Mirra 2 moves with the person, at one with the body. When you sit, the seat and back adapt instantly. With dynamic surfaces that respond to your slightest movements and simple, intuitive adjustments to fine-tune the fit, Mirra 2 balances immediate comfort and personalised ergonomics in a single sophisticated design.

Support in motion. Support for seated movement starts with a flexible yet supportive design that allows your body to move freely and naturally. Mirra 2’s Loop Spine provides torsional flex, allowing you to stretch and reach laterally, while the Harmonic 2 tilt provides a smooth, balanced feel as you recline.

Butterfly back or TriFlex. Two back options help Mirra 2 work for a variety of people and applications. The ultra-responsive Butterfly back results from inventing a method for merging a fabric layer with polymer veins to create a dynamic hybrid structure that acts like a suspension membrane. The TriFlex back meets more rigorous cleaning protocols because there is no fabric layer.

PostureFit. Both Mirra 2 back options offer passive PostureFit sacral support to keep your spine properly aligned as you sit. And both are ventilated to keep you cool, as well as supported, no matter how active you are.

Form celebrates function. The lean design of Mirra 2 brings a sophisticated profile and visual lightness to any space. An emphasis on performance is visible. The individual components and their function are apparent and celebrated, and vary accordingly in material and appearance.

Versatile palette. As performance defines the look of Mirra 2’s components, their colours allow for significant options for defining the overall aesthetic of your chair or stool. Added selections for textiles, back loop and spine colours, and base finishes offer flexibility and encourage personalisation.

The more people move, the more they need support that moves with them. Ten years after the Mirra chair was introduced – during which over 1.5 million chairs had been sold – the designers at Studio 7.5 believed it was time to evaluate and, if necessary, rethink their original design. For one thing, they noted, work is evolving. People move, and the more they’re in motion, the more they need support that moves with them.

Rethinking an original. Precisely because of the new agile way people work today, the designers found the idea of a highly individualised personal chair was still valid. While Studio 7.5 retained the athletic attitude and intuitive adjustments of the original, they advanced the material and form of this idea in virtually every aspect of Mirra 2.

Testing ideas, full-scale. Using full-scale models, the designers at Studio 7.5 test the validity of a design and its component parts. For Mirra 2, every piece received this tactile, real-world treatment until the most elegant solutions emerged.

Less material, used intelligently. Building on its legacy as the first office chair developed from the ground up with environmental responsibility in mind, Mirra 2 moves responsible design forward by advancing the use and reuse of materials. In redesigning Mirra, as in all their work, the mantra at Studio 7.5 was “every molecule counts”. By this they mean a close examination of every element is essential in order to use the least material possible while also advancing performance.

“Design by its nature is collaborative.”

Designer: Studio 7.5

Burkhard Schmitz and Carola Zwick started their studio as a team of six in Berlin in 1992. The group was looking for the freedom to work on projects that interested them, and for the freedom to do so without bosses or titles.

This is the way they’ve operated ever since. “Everybody does everything”, says Schmitz, speaking for the group that now includes Carola’s brother, Roland Zwick, and a small team of seven. “That’s how we cultivate ideas and maintain our openness and curiosity”.

The group’s name, Studio 7.5, comes from an early idea to rent a 7.5-ton truck, put a model shop in it and drive from one project site to another. Obviously, freedom of movement is important for these designers. They move freely – and smartly – when designing products for their clients.
